Over my cryptography course, i've been having a discussion with some french about the redundancy of the language and it would be interesting to find out what the letter entropy of french and german to support your argument about "usefulness" ^^.

(p.s. english is somewhere around 1,5)

Cool, someone who reads this stuff
True, I've noticed that too. But have you noticed that conversations don't go on for longer in German than they do in French? I'm not sure about this, but I've got a hunch it's true, too.

I have often thought about the signal-to-noise ratio issue and how languages compare. I would agree that German can survive a worse channel noise level, but -- as you might expect -- its data rate is lower.

This is easiest to see in text, where a single message is provided in multiple languages. The repetition of adjectival and article endings provides redundancy, but at a cost. I have found a typical German text is 10-20% longer than either English or French (not even counting the fact that the German diacritics encode information without using a character space).

Incidentally, I used to work at R&S myself.

    Hey Martin,

just to let you know I still check your blog with interest... I may have a proposition for you that may(stress should be placed on this word) earn us some money! I'll let you know nearer the time.
The only thing I know about you these days is that you are working in Munich - sorry but could not make it to your invite - I'm working full time here à la BNP.

Hope all is well and that you can visit Warwick some point later in the year to see Thomas and myself
